First record of the Indo-Pacific arrow bulleye Priacanthus sagittarius Starnes, 1988 in the Mediterranean Sea

A single specimen of Priacanthus sagittarius was captured by a commercial trawler off the Mediterranean coast of Israel on 28 November 2009. This is the first record of the species, and possibly the first alien member of the Priacanthidae from the Mediterranean Sea.

The Eastern Mediterranean basin is facing a high invasion rate of mainly Indo-Pacific species entering through the Suez Canal. The needlespined urchin, Diadema setosum, was first documented in the Mediterranean in 2006 off southern Turkey. The new record of D. setosum in September 2009 represents the first evidence of its presence in Lebanese coastal waters.

Eight specimens of the slender ponyfish Equulites elongatus were collected, by otter trawl, between 6 December 2014 and 18 April 2015 from Turkish waters, off Mersin. This constitutes the second record of this species in the Mediterranean Sea and is about 530 km distant from the site of first record (Tel Aviv, Israel).
